(1949-) ~ Inducted 2006

Doyle, Daniel E., 1949-

Daniel Doyle is a graduate of Bates College, where he was co-captain of the varsity basketball team, and of the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy at Tufts University. Dan holds two honorary doctoral degrees – one from Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts and the second from the University of Rhode Island. He is also a member of the Bates College Board of Trustees.

As boys’ basketball coach at Kingswood-Oxford School (CT), and Trinity College, Dan complied an overall coaching record of 142 wins and 45 losses, and was New England College Coach of the Year in 1980-81.

Dan founded the Institute for International Sport in 1986 after writing a paper at the Fletcher School regarding the creation of such an institute. The Institute is now referred to by many in the media as the finest sports/educational entity in the world. Among the programs that Dan conceived are National Sportsmanship Day, the world’s largest sportsmanship program and the World Scholar-Athlete Games, which this June will welcome delegates from 160 countries and all 50 states – making it likely the largest sports/cultural event in the world in 2006. The Institute also administers programs such as the Center for Sports Parenting and the International Scholar-Athlete Hall of Fame on the campus of the University of Rhode Island.

Dan wrote the acclaimed novel Are You Watching, Adolph Rupp? favorably reviewed in over fifty publications, including The New York Times. Dan’s next book, The Encyclopedia of Sports Parenting will be published by Warner Books. For the fifth consecutive year, Dan is serving as an NCAA Foundation Distinguished Lecturer. His 2006 lecture tour has encompassed visits to a number of Division III schools in the state of New York.

The Sporting News recently named Dan as ranking among the most influential people in all of sports – specifically naming him to The Sporting News "10 Powerful Sports Figures to Watch" list.
