Mowry Lowe

(1910-1973) ~ Inducted 1974

Mowry Lowe was born on March 12, 1910 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island to Samuel and Fanny (Udler) Perlow. He graduated from both Pawtucket High School and Northeastern University in Boston.

He began his long career in radio broadcasting in 1931 as "Maury Lowe" when he joined WEAN Providence as an intern. He was known for his "Man on the Street" broadcasts. They were one of the most popular radio programs in the 1930s. His regular broadcasting efforts were also popular especially those immediately following the destruction caused by the hurricane of 1938.

In 1948 Lowe was appointed WEAN sales manager, and in 1950 he became that station's general manager. In 1955 he became general manager of WTRY in Troy, New York and president of Tri-City Radio, but he returned to Rhode Island in 1961 as the general manager of the new radio station WLKW.

Lowe was a founder and first president of the Rhode Island Broadcasters Association. He received this association's distinguished service award in 1971. For his long pioneering career as a radio broadcaster and executive he was inducted into the Rhode Island Radio Hall of Fame in 2017 receiving its Shepard Award. This award named after John and Robert Shepard, owners of the Shepard Department Stores, recognized Lowe as a pioneer New England newscaster, gifted announcer, and premier radio executive.

Lowe was also involved in numerous civic associations including service on Governor John Chafee's Commission on Tourism. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees of Roger Williams College, the Rhode Island Heart Association and the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame. An avid golfer, Lowe was past president of the Ledgemont County Club.

His first wife, Sally Deluty pre-deceased him in 1947. He was remarried in 1956 to Edna M. Giblin. Lowe died on October 1, 1973. He was survived by his wife and a daughter.
