< BackFrederick D. "Fritz" Pollard, Jr.
(1915-2003) ~ Inducted 2004Frederick D. "Fritz" Pollard Jr. won a bronze medal in the 110-meter high hurdles in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Pollard equaled the world record for the 45-yard high hurdles while running for Brown University in the spring of 1934. At Senn High School in Springfield, Massachusetts he had been national interscholastic champion in both the low and high hurdles.
He came to Brown as the son of Fritz Pollard, Brown's All-American halfback who led the Bruins to an appearance in the first Rose Bowl in 1916. Pollard completed his collegiate athletic career at the University of North Dakota where he was a Little All-American selection in football as halfback in 1938. He attended John Marshall Law School in Chicago and was a special services officer in the U.S. Army during World War II.
From the mid-1960s until his retirement he worked in Washington, D.C. with the State Department. Pollard died in Washington in 2003 at the age of eighty-seven and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. He now joins his father as a member of the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame.
