Debra A. Mulligan

Debra A. Mulligan received a Bachelor of Arts from Rhode Island College in 1982, a Masters Degree in History from Providence College in 1986, and a Ph.D. from PC in 1997. She is an associate professor at Roger Williams University, and has taught a wide variety of courses in East Asian, American, and European history since first arriving on campus in 2001.

Her publications include an article in the Massachusetts Journal of History and one in the Journal of New England History, several informational articles for Salem Press’s Encyclopedia series [published from 2009-2011], and a book chapter in, the two-volume series, The Cultural History of Reading, Greenwood Press [2008], and a chapter on “Roger Williams and ‘Soul Libertie’ in Decentering Discussions on Religion and State: Emerging Narratives, Challenging Perspectives, published in April, 2015.

She is currently under contract with McFarland Press [2017] to complete a biography on the life of Rhode Island Governor (1941-1945) and United States Attorney General (1949-1952) James Howard McGrath.

Her service at Roger Williams University has been varied, but she has been most active in two capacities; as faculty advisor for Phi Alpha Theta [2001- present], and as Co-Director of the East Asian Studies Title VI Department of Education grant [2009-2012]. Presently, she acts as coordinator for East Asian Area Studies.

She has served as faculty advisor for the university’s Phi Alpha Theta chapter (Alpha Eta Kappa) since arriving on campus. Through her work with the society, many students have been given the opportunity to present their original research at regional meetings in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York, and at national conferences in Florida and Washington, D.C. As part of PAT, she has also hosted three New England regional meetings, has served as a national councilor (2006-2008, and 2016-2018), as judge for undergraduate and graduate paper prize from 2006-2015) and as an advisory board member (2008-2010).

She resides in Warren, Rhode Island with her husband David.
