Brigadier General James J. D’Agostino



Brigadier General D’Agostino was the Assistant Adjutant General for Air for the Rhode Island National Guard. He served as the chief advisor to the Adjutant General on all matters pertaining to Air National Guard programs, policies, operations, management, and command and control of the Rhode Island ANG and provided staff assistance, guidance and direction concerning ANG personnel, administration, training, recruiting and retention incentives, and budgetary matters.

His military career began in June 1967 with the United States Army. After both basic and advanced infantry training, he was assigned to "E" Company, 4th Battalion, 21st Infantry, 11th Light Infantry Brigade, Americal Division, Military Assistance Command Vietnam. General D’Agostino served with distinction during four military Campaigns - Air Ground, Air Offensive Phase III, Air Offensive Phase IV, and TET 69/Counter Offensive. After Vietnam, General D'Agostino transferred to the Army Reserve and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in 1973.
In July 1974, General D'Agostino joined the 143d Civil Engineering Flight, RIANG. In 1977, he graduated from the ANG Academy of Military Science and was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant. After serving as the Engineering and Construction Officer through July 1978, General D'Agostino's military career then "merged" with his full time career when he resigned his position as Deputy Traffic Engineer for the City of Providence to become the Base Civil Engineer for the 281st Combat Communications Group, Coventry, RI. During his 21 year tenure, General D'Agostino completely rebuilt the Coventry and North Smithfield ANG Stations. His outstanding efforts were recognized in 1997 when he was selected as Rhode Island’s Federal Professional Employee of the Year. In August 1999, General D’Agostino was selected as Deputy for Property & Fiscal Operations for the United States Property and Fiscal Officer for Rhode Island. In March 2001, General D’Agostino was appointed the USPFO for Rhode Island. In October 2005, General D’Agostino was promoted to his current rank and assigned as the Assistant Adjutant General for Air and Deputy Commanding General of the Rhode Island National Guard. After more than 38 years of military service, General D’Agostino reached mandatory retirement age in August 2006.
His numerous awards and decorations include the Combat Infantry Badge, Legion of Merit w/Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star, Vietnam Service Medal w/4 Battle Stars, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Master Civil Engineering Badge and the Rhode Island Star w/OLC.
A graduate of Classical High School, General D'Agostino received a BS degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering and an MPA degree from the University of RI. He also graduated from the Air University's Air War College and Professional Military Comptroller School and completed over 40 military courses of study to include Air Command and Staff College, Squadron Officer School, Fiscal Law, Contract Management, Government Contract Law, Contracting Officer's Representative, Financial Management Orientation, Dynamics of International Terrorism and Logistics Management.
His professional memberships and affiliations include former Chair and current board member of the SHARE Foundation at UMASS Dartmouth, former President of the RINGTEC Federal Credit Union, former President of the RI Department Reserve Officers Association, former President of the RI National Guard Association, former Commander of the RI Commandery Military Order of Foreign Wars, Past President of The 100 Club of RI, and Vice President of the RI Aviation Hall of Fame. Additionally, he is a life member of numerous professional, military and social organizations.

11. August 2006 – July 2007, Retired.

12. July 2007 – November 2013, Project Manager (Contract Employee), RI Army National Guard Construction and Facilities Management Office (CFMO). Assisted the CFMO and Contracting Officer's Representative in the construction management of two military construction (MILCON) projects totaling in excess of 40 million dollars and encompassing about 100 thousand square feet of floorspace. Performed technical reviews on all project submittals (construction progress schedule, shop drawings, materials, test reports, etc.) submitted by the construction contractors. Prepared Statements of Work, Independent Government Estimates, Change Order Proposals, Daily Progress Reports, etc. on these and numerous other Sustainment, Repair or Modernization (SRM) and MILCON projects planned or executed by the CFMO. Reviewed and provided comments on Architect-Engineer (A-E) design submissions for a variety of SRM and MILCON projects. Worked closely with A-E firms to insure all work was effected as per project plans and specifications. Participated in weekly on-site construction progress meetings. Conducted project “punch-list” inspections at both the 95% and final completion stages.

13. November 2013 – Present, Retired.
